HEROES IN CURRENCY
Lapu-Lapu in Philippine Numismatics
Lapu-Lapu, the chieftain of Mactan who resisted the expedition of Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, is widely regarded as one of the earliest symbols of resistance in Philippine history. His victory during the Battle of Mactan has made him an enduring national figure, representing courage, independence, and the defense of local sovereignty.

Because of this historical significance, Lapu-Lapu has appeared in several numismatic items over the years, including circulating coins and commemorative medals. These issues not only honor the hero of Mactan but also reflect how Philippine numismatics commemorates important historical figures.
For collectors, Lapu-Lapu-themed pieces provide an interesting intersection between history, national identity, and modern commemorative coinage.
Lapu-Lapu appears on several Philippine coins, most notably the One Centavo and One Sentimo coins issued from 1967 to 1994 across the Pilipino, Ang Bagong Lipunan, and Flora and Fauna series.

One Centavo – Pilipino Series (1967–1974)
The first appearance of Lapu-Lapu in Philippine circulating coinage occurred with the introduction of the Pilipino Series in 1967. The series marked an important transition in Philippine coinage, replacing earlier English-language legends with Filipino inscriptions and emphasizing national identity through the depiction of Filipino historical figures.
The One Centavo coin composed of aluminum featured a portrait of Lapu-Lapu, recognizing him as a symbol of resistance and independence in Philippine history.

One Sentimo – Ang Bagong Lipunan Series (1975–1982)
When the Ang Bagong Lipunan coin series was introduced in 1975, the portrait of Lapu-Lapu was retained on the 1 Sentimo aluminum coin, continuing the recognition of the historical hero in Philippine currency.
The new series reflected the political and cultural messaging of the period, with updated legends and design elements. Despite the redesign, the continued use of Lapu-Lapu demonstrates the lasting symbolic importance of the hero within Philippine numismatic imagery.

One Sentimo – Flora and Fauna Series (1983–1994)
The Flora and Fauna coin series, introduced in 1983, retained the portrait of Lapu-Lapu on the 1 Sentimo aluminum coin while redesigning the reverse side to incorporate environmental themes.
This series highlighted the Philippines’ rich biodiversity while maintaining familiar historical figures on the obverse of certain denominations. The series remained in circulation until the introduction of the New Design Series in 1995.

Lapu-Lapu Commemorative Issues
Quincentennial Commemorative Medal (2021)
In 2021, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas issued a commemorative medal marking the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mactan, the historic encounter in which Lapu-Lapu and his warriors defeated the expedition led by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521.
The medal honors Lapu-Lapu as a symbol of Filipino resistance and national pride. Its design highlights the historical significance of the Battle of Mactan and commemorates the enduring legacy of the Mactan chieftain in Philippine history.
This commemorative issue forms part of the broader national observance of the Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines, which also included a ₱5,000 commemorative banknote recognizing the events of 1521.
For collectors, the 2021 medal represents a modern numismatic tribute issued by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas to one of the most important figures in early Philippine history and reflects the continuing role of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas in commemorating significant milestones through numismatic art.

Private Commemorative Medals
In addition to official releases, several privately produced commemorative medals have also been issued featuring Lapu-Lapu. These medals are typically produced by private minting organizations or numismatic groups and are often created to commemorate historical anniversaries or cultural themes.
Private medals vary widely in design, metal composition, and mintage. Some examples feature stylized depictions of Lapu-Lapu armed with traditional weapons, while others portray scenes inspired by the Battle of Mactan. Although these pieces are not official currency, they are sometimes collected alongside government-issued commemoratives as part of thematic collections related to Philippine heroes.
Collectors interested in this area often study the artistic interpretations, production quality, and historical themes presented in these medals.

Collecting Lapu-Lapu Numismatic Items
Lapu-Lapu-themed numismatic pieces appeal to collectors for several reasons.

Second, these items span multiple areas of collecting, including circulating coins, commemorative issues, and private medals. This allows collectors to build thematic collections centered on Philippine heroes or historical events.
Finally, the designs themselves often highlight artistic interpretations of the historical figure. Different issues present Lapu-Lapu in varying styles, reflecting evolving perspectives on national identity and historical memory.

Lapu-Lapu and Historical Representation in Philippine Numismatics
The presence of Lapu-Lapu in Philippine numismatics illustrates how coinage and commemorative medals can serve as instruments of cultural memory.
Through circulating coins such as the One Centavo and One Sentimo issues of the Pilipino, Ang Bagong Lipunan, and Flora and Fauna series and modern commemorative issues marking the quincentennial of the Battle of Mactan, Lapu-Lapu continues to be recognized as an enduring symbol of Filipino resilience.
For numismatists, these pieces demonstrate how Philippine currency not only facilitates commerce but also reflects the nation’s historical narratives and cultural identity.
