Douglas MacArthur in Philippine Numismatics
General Douglas MacArthur played a central role in one of the most significant chapters of Philippine history during the Second World War. As commander of Allied forces in the Pacific, he led the campaign to liberate the Philippines from Japanese occupation, fulfilling his promise to return after leaving the country in 1942.
His return to the Philippines on October 20, 1944, during the landing at Leyte marked a turning point in the Pacific war and became one of the most iconic moments in Philippine and American military history.

These coins commemorated the third anniversary of the Leyte landing, when Allied forces returned to begin the liberation of the Philippines from Japanese occupation.
Both coins were struck at the San Francisco Mint in the United States and were among the first commemorative issues of the newly independent Republic of the Philippines.
Design Features
The obverse features a portrait of General MacArthur with the inscription:
“Defender and Liberator of the Philippines”
It also includes the historic date October 20, 1944. The reverse displays the seal of the Republic of the Philippines with the denomination and year.
These coins hold a special place in Philippine numismatics because they were issued during the early years of the Third Philippine Republic.
The silver 1 Peso coin is especially notable as part of a broader series of commemorative silver peso coins honoring important historical figures and national milestones.

Later Commemorative Issues
MacArthur’s legacy continued to be recognized in later Philippine commemorative coins.
One notable example is the 1980 commemorative coin issued to mark the 100th birth anniversary of Douglas MacArthur. The coin features his portrait and references the historic Leyte landing, commemorating his role in the liberation of the Philippines during the Second World War.
The 1980 centennial coin was produced in both Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) and Proof finishes, with proof coins struck using polished dies and planchets to achieve a sharper design and mirror-like background, as also seen in Philippine proof coin sets.

Historical Context: The Leyte Landing and Liberation
The appearance of Douglas MacArthur in Philippine numismatics is closely tied to the Allied landing at Leyte on October 20, 1944—one of the most important events of the Second World War in the Philippines.
After Japanese forces occupied the Philippines in 1942, MacArthur was ordered to withdraw to Australia. Before departing, he promised:
“I shall return.”
